Summary

4th in Dune Chronicles Series

With more than ten million copies sold, Frank Herbert's magnificent DUNE books stand among the major achievements of the imagination。 Of them all, GOD EMPEROR OF DUNE, the fourth, is the greatest and the grandest。 Centuries have passed on Dune itself, and the planet is green with life。 Leto II, the son of Dune's savior, is still alive but far from human。 He has become a human-sandworm creature, ruling over his angry and frustrated empire with his vast legions of Fish Speaker soldiers, enforcing peace for dozens of generations to teach the universe a lesson, while also waiting for the right time to turn Dune back into a desert planet。 The fate of all humanity hangs on Leto's awesome sacrifice。

"GOD EMPEROR OF DUNE seizes the glittering loose ends of empire, ecology and mysticism and weaves them together into a seamless, brilliant tapestry of a human ecology evolving to transcend worlds and time。" (Baltimore Sun)

One of the best in the series。 Great build to a predictable but amazing ending。 It's like watching a train wreck of a philosophical persuasion in slow motion。 One of the best in the series。 Great build to a predictable but amazing ending。 It's like watching a train wreck of a philosophical persuasion in slow motion。 。。。more

Man become worm。 Too many Duncan Idahos。 Woman has orgasm from watching man climb wall。 A classic tale。 Best sci-fi book I ever read。

For those that were considering continuing the dune series, I'd recommend to umm。。。。 Stop before this one。 It's not what you would consider good。 Between the poor attempts to wax philosophy, strange fixation on homosexual soldiers, violence and rape, eugenics, and the fact that Leto the 2 has turned in to a jabba the hut style human-sand trout-worm hybrid, with hand flippers and a fat long body carried around on a floating cart that very much does NOT have a huge human worm penis (they want you For those that were considering continuing the dune series, I'd recommend to umm。。。。 Stop before this one。 It's not what you would consider good。 Between the poor attempts to wax philosophy, strange fixation on homosexual soldiers, violence and rape, eugenics, and the fact that Leto the 2 has turned in to a jabba the hut style human-sand trout-worm hybrid, with hand flippers and a fat long body carried around on a floating cart that very much does NOT have a huge human worm penis (they want you to be VERY CLEAR that he DOES NOT have a giant human worm penis somewhere in his giant pre-worm body) but that has little protrusions you can suck on for spice concentrated moisture that let's you taste his infinite vision of infinity and the grand machinations of his Golden Path - all that and no real plot or purpose, just a benevolent (?) but visionary tyrannical leader who wants to hang out with clone after clone of Duncan Idaho and teach him lessons, but can't comprehend bc they keep reviving a 3000 yr old version of him who doesn't understand the world hes arisen in to 。。。more

The Worm God is weird。 But I like him。 Another great read in the Dune saga。 I thought this would be my last one。 But now I must continue to learn what happens to the next generations。

Terrible, so slow and barely anything happens。 Need to put down the Dune franchise for a little bit。 And what the hell is the Golden Path and why should we care about it? There was no real build up to the ending, plots occur midway through the book and are never heard from again。 There’s no other character development or narration other than Leto 2 and Duncan。 I just don’t understand why people think this book was good

2。5 Herbert tries so hard to weave philosophical, political, and religious concepts into every Dune book, but in this one they were truly grating, and didn’t really hit the mark。 The homophobia and misogyny also makes the series harder to read as it goes on。

better written than Children of Dune; worse than Dune and Dune Messiah。 odd would be an understatement for describing this novel’s central concept and character, but it isn’t so odd as to take you out of the story。 with that being said, I’m not sure we needed this book, nor the one before it。 the story feels unnecessary。 I would’ve been perfectly fine ending the series with Messiah, where Paul’s story (by far the most compelling of the books) ends its natural arc。 so if you’re looking to start t better written than Children of Dune; worse than Dune and Dune Messiah。 odd would be an understatement for describing this novel’s central concept and character, but it isn’t so odd as to take you out of the story。 with that being said, I’m not sure we needed this book, nor the one before it。 the story feels unnecessary。 I would’ve been perfectly fine ending the series with Messiah, where Paul’s story (by far the most compelling of the books) ends its natural arc。 so if you’re looking to start the Dune series, I can’t recommend reading this far: just stick with the first two。 。。。more

Loved it。 This series gets weirder and weirder but that's likely part of the point。 Leto 2 is now a giant worm that's 4 thousand years old and God Emperor of the universe。 Bizarre feat, Leto as lead protagonist is a monstrous tyrant, yet manages to be sympathetic and compelling。 Lots more of profound musings on government, religion and society。 Also a series that explores passage of time in a unique way。 Compelling and original。 Loved it。 This series gets weirder and weirder but that's likely part of the point。 Leto 2 is now a giant worm that's 4 thousand years old and God Emperor of the universe。 Bizarre feat, Leto as lead protagonist is a monstrous tyrant, yet manages to be sympathetic and compelling。 Lots more of profound musings on government, religion and society。 Also a series that explores passage of time in a unique way。 Compelling and original。 。。。more

I was excited to read this next book in the Dune series as I am enjoying the books overall。 Having now completed book four, I can say that I liked this one less than the first three。 It was confusing in places and the story line seemed more about the God Emperor's word play with his underlings than advancing the tale of the Atreides。 I was excited to read this next book in the Dune series as I am enjoying the books overall。 Having now completed book four, I can say that I liked this one less than the first three。 It was confusing in places and the story line seemed more about the God Emperor's word play with his underlings than advancing the tale of the Atreides。 。。。more

This one is really testing the limits as far as philosophical nonsense goes but - what can I say - I love it! A little more Duncan and/or Siona stuff might help keep the pace going and offset the not so relatable all-knowing-god-emperor-and-wormboy-leto-atreides stuff。 Still one of the most engrossing meditations on spirituality and the human condition I've read though! Leto II is a sandworm。 This is 500 pages of him preaching about his sandworm-hood。 Make it stop。

A clever attempt to keep the Golden Path relevant that falls short given the inhumanity of its central figure。

This book is 500 pages of a bunch of characters discussing philosophy almost entirely set in a single room and then a guy falls off of a bridge。 If I could rate it 6 stars out of 5 I would。 Highly recommend。

This book takes place about 3500 years after the end of the third book。 In this book, you more or less just see what Leto II is up to。 You learn more about the inner workings of his mind and what others close to him also think。 The main plot of this book revolves around Leto falling in love and the ramifications of that on everyone else。One feature about this book that I enjoyed was how incredibly detailed everything was。 Every little bit of the characters and the settings were described in vivi This book takes place about 3500 years after the end of the third book。 In this book, you more or less just see what Leto II is up to。 You learn more about the inner workings of his mind and what others close to him also think。 The main plot of this book revolves around Leto falling in love and the ramifications of that on everyone else。One feature about this book that I enjoyed was how incredibly detailed everything was。 Every little bit of the characters and the settings were described in vivid detail。 It made the reading very immersive and enjoyable。 Another positive thing was the motivations of each character made sense and the actions they took also made sense。 The only character that doesn't fit this bill is Leto himself but that makes sense considering who he is and how much he knows。One negative thing about this book was not a whole lot happens during the majority of the book。 It opens with action and ends with action but inbetween that it is mainly dialogue and world building almost, but this is a Frank Herbert book and they are all like this so I was ready for thatI would give this book a 5/5 stars and I would recommend it to everyone who wants to read a very character driven Science fiction book。 (as long as they have read every book before this in the series) 。。。more

If you like dialogue, this book is for you。 Great debates about the state of the galaxy and what makes a tyrant vastly outnumbered any action scenes, but not to the detriment of the book。 While harder to get into than the first three Dune books, it’s content and ideas held up to the precedent set。 Slow at times, and hard to understand at others, it delivers some strong philosophical ideas in a strange setting。 7/10
